Whatever the construction of your roof, you need to pay attention
to its condition. Ideally, you should have your roof checked at
least once a year – late summer or early autumn are good times for
this, so that you have time to rectify any problems before winter
sets in. If you can, clear any debris off the roof, including
leaf-waste, twigs and branches. Whilst most of this material ends
up in the guttering, some of it will lie on the roof and it should
be removed.
Unless
you have the right safety equipment, you shouldn’t carry this
inspection out by yourself. Roofs are dangerous places and you can
do more harm than good by walking on the tiles. If you can, hire a
roofing professional to inspect your London roof for you. They will
also be able to spot broken, cracked or loose tiling and repair or
replace roofing where necessary.
Your
inspector will pay special attention to the areas where roofs are
most vulnerable; around dormer windows, chimney breasts, ridges and
air vents. If your roof is leaking, these are the most probable
causes, and the places where you are most likely to need roofing
repairs.
Part of
the job that you can do yourself is to go into your attic or roof
space and inspect the roof from the inside. Look for any bowing of
the roof, rotting of the joists or areas where water is coming in.
This will help your roofer to find the problem areas from the
outside.
